20 Best Productivity Tips

How To Get More Done In A Day

Be honest, when you think of productivity, you think of someone who’s really busy all the time getting things done, right? Productivity doesn’t always have to be go, go, go. Sometimes the best way to be most productive is to focus on self-care.

Here are my top productivity tips to help you make the most of the new year. Some will get you up and get you going, others will encourage you to slow down. It’s all about balance. 😊

Tip No. 1 ~ Turn off notifications

It’s incredibly difficult to get anything done when your phone is going off every few minutes and you’re constantly stopping what you’re doing, to check your phone.

Tip No. 2 ~ Don’t check Facebook

When you’re working on a project or trying to get something done, stay off Facebook! Wait until you’re done with what you’re doing, then reward yourself by scrolling your feed for 10-15 minutes.

Tip No. 3 ~ Get an early workout in

It’s been proven that you’re more productive when you get those muscles moving first thing in the morning. I do a quick 10-minute workout in the morning just to get that blood pumping and even after just 10 minutes, I feel charged up enough to take on that to-do list!

Tip No. 4 ~ Drink more water

I know, I know, you’ve heard this one before….then why aren’t you doing it??? Seriously though, the more water you drink, the less exhausted you feel throughout your day.

Tip No. 5 ~ Take a break

You will be way more productive if you work for small periods of time, with small breaks in between, rather than trying to work for a long 6-hour stretch before you get out of your chair!

Tip No. 6 ~ Say no

Stop trying to pile on more than you can actually do. Make this year a year to focus on simplifying. Focus on you, what you can reasonably do, and how much more rest you can take this year as opposed to last year.

Tip No. 7 ~ Throw perfectionism out the window

Perfectionism kills productivity. Period. In the wise words of my dear friend Alex Beadon, done is better than perfect.

Tip No. 8 ~ Toss your to-do list

Ok so I don’t mean, don’t use a to-do list at all anymore. What I mean is, use it wisely. What do I mean by that? Try scheduling and using routines more than a standard to-do list. I explain all of this in detail in the very first class of our online homemaking school, the Home Management Society. I think setting routines is the most important place to start when you want to be more productive.

Tip No. 9 ~ Declutter

C’mon now, do I really need to explain why this one is on the list? You will be so much more productive if you’re more organized this year. Can I get an Amen?!?

Tip No. 10 ~ Braindump

We have way too many things going on in our little heads and if we don’t write things down, we’ll never get it all done. Stop torturing yourself by trying to remember it all and start writing it down! If you’re a paper person, use a notebook to keep to jot down all of those ideas, projects, to-do’s, etc. If you’re a digital person….Evernote!!!

Tip No. 11 ~ Do your worst

First. Hehe. Get those big huge ugly to-do’s out of the way first so that the rest of your day will go much smoother and be much more enjoyable.

Tip No. 12 ~ Eat breakfast

I used to skip breakfast all the time and can I tell you something? Hungry and cranky don’t make for a productive day! Get the most important meal of the day in first and you’ll for sure have a way more productive (and pleasant) day.

Tip No. 13 ~ Pomodoro

For those who know what the Pomodoro technique is, use it! For those who don’t know what it is, look it up! Just kidding, I guess I’ll tell ya 😉 Basically, it’s setting your timer for 25 minutes, doing focused work for those 25 minutes, and then taking a 5-10 minute break. Repeat. Repeat. Until you get all your stuff done. It actually works great for me! Focused work. Break. Focused work. Break….try it!

Tip No. 14 ~ Get an accountability partner

People tend to work much better when they know they have someone holding them accountable. Get a trusted friend or group of friends, tell them what your plan is, and have them hold you accountable to getting it done! Check in with them weekly or even daily if you need to.

Tip No. 15 ~ Sleep!

Ya, you forgot that 6-8 of those 24 hours need to be spent on sleep didn’t you? Get your sleep on! You will feel so much better and way more ready to take on the day when you feel rested, than when all you want to do is crawl back into bed because you stayed up too late playing Minecraft last night…..I’m speaking metaphorically, of course.

Tip No. 16 ~ Relax

Take a day out of the week, one day, to just relax and refresh your mind and body. For me, that’s Sunday. Good ‘ol lazy Sunday when all we do is lounge around the house and play Minecraft with the kids all day 😁

Tip No. 17 ~ Focus on a new habit every two months

Once every couple months, start a new positive habit. Why two months instead of one month? Because it may take 21 days to form a new habit, but did you know it actually takes 63 days to master that habit?

Tip No. 18 ~ Set goals

Now I’m not gonna go into the whole, set S.M.A.R.T. goals thing….we all know about that already. Then why is it that people still cannot stick to their goals? Cause they set too many of them! Again with the whole not putting too much on your plate thing. If you’re new to goal setting, set one goal and don’t set another one for yourself until you’ve accomplished the first one. Focus & Finish. Focus & Finish.

Tip No. 19 ~ Check your vibe

Stay positive. Surround yourself with positive people. Be around people who believe in themselves, believe in their dreams, cause that kind of happy just rubs off on you and you need to be positive if you’re going to be productive.

Tip No. 20 ~ Nike

Just do it. Stop overthinking it, just do it. Don’t retreat, just do it. Stop procrastinating, just do it. Don’t doubt yourself or your abilities, just do it. Seriously, give the Nike slogan a try and see how much further you get along those goals and that to-do list.

    Great tips! I’ll have to share this. I hope it helps lots of people. Any one of these tips would increase productivity 😊 BUT THERE’S 20. WOW. Where did you learn all this stuff?

      Aww, thanks so much Andrea! Oh my goodness, I learn through trial and error more than anything lol. I do love to read though, so a lot of new things I’ll try for myself are inspired by books I’ve read in the past.
      Some things work, others don’t work for me. I share the ones that work 😉
