How to Clean Hardwood Floors

Making It Shine:

The simple Two-Step Method to Cleaning Your Hardwood Floors

I’ve always wanted hardwood floors in my home. I wasn’t expecting all the dust that would be so visible if you skipped just one day of sweeping. I’m not a big fan of sweeping.

Keeping my hardwood floors clean used to feel like such a chore. Until I discovered two little tools that cut my cleaning time in half. Since moving to a new home, we no longer have hardwood floors. I’m writing this post about how I used to keep my floors clean for anyone who does have hardwood floors.

So here is my two-step method that keeps my floors clean in just 5 minutes a day.

The Easiest Way to “Sweep”

When you have little ones, you will always get crumbs on your floors. No matter what my kids eat, they seem to always leave me some to sweep up afterward. I used to hate sweeping up messes after each and every meal in order to keep my kitchen looking clean.

It took so long to sweep up. Sometimes food would even stick to the broom and it was so gross cleaning that broom head. Finally, I decided that I was breaking up with the broom and traded up for something so much better. Enter the Swiffer Sweep and Vac.

This thing is amazing and I actually really enjoy “sweeping” now. It takes no time at all and it picks up crumbs without me having to clean any gross broom head. All I have to do is empty the cup into the trash and voilà, all done.

I use this thing after each meal and I love how easy it now is to keep my floors clean! This is my daily maintenance on my kitchen floor. Unless someone spills something sticky, I don’t pull out the mop but once a week.

A mop That Gives You Results for Up To 7 Days

The second part is using a mop and a floor cleaner that give you the biggest bang for your buck. If you like using tools that allow you to purchase once and re-use again and again, you’re gonna love this product.

I used to be all about the Swiffer Wet Jet until I started noticing it wasn’t really cleaning my floors as well as I had hoped. I think it’s great for quick clean-ups but for my once a week deeper cleaning, I needed something with a little more scrubbing power. After researching a ton, I found two that I really liked.

The Bona Mop was a very popular choice, I noticed. A lot of bloggers were writing about it and I found a ton of YouTube videos on it. I almost decided to purchase this one, until a friend of mine came over one day and told me about what she was using.

My friend manages a restaurant, so you can imagine the amount of floor cleaning that needs to be done at the end of the night. She’s telling me about how great this mop is and I’m thinking, if it’s good enough for cleaning restaurant floors, it’s good enough for my kitchen! So, I decided to buy it, and I have never regretted that decision.

The Sh-Mop has been so easy to use and I love that I can just throw the cloth in the washing machine and use it again and again. I also love how slim it is, it fits under my refrigerator even! I know that every nook and cranny is getting a good clean and in just minutes a week.

When I had hardwood floors, I would use the Sh-Mop with the Method Squirt and Mop Wood Floor Cleaner. It left my floors so shiny and it smelled so good for like a week afterward. My husband thought I was mopping every day because of how great our floors looked, even days after using these two products together.

Now that I no longer have wood floors, I still use the Sh-Mop but I pair it with the Method Squirt and Mop Hard Floor Cleaner. I love the way their products smell and as curious as I was about the Bona Mop, I love my Sh-Mop and Method cleaner so much that there’s no reason to even try the others. When you find something that works perfectly for you, stick with it.
