Decluttering Your Pens, Pencils, and Markers

How to Avoid Keeping More Than You Need

If you’re like me, you probably have way more pens and markers than you actually need. Having backup items are great, but sometimes we tend to go overboard and keep way more than we will ever use. So how do we keep a good supply on hand without feeling like a hoarder? Read on.

Assess Your Inventory

First thing you want to do is grab a bin, box, or basket of some sort that will be big enough to collect all your writing utensils. Next, it’s time to go around the house and collect all of your pens, pencils, markers, and highlighters, dumping them in your bin as you go through the house. If you have kids, don’t do this for their items if they’re old enough to make decisions for themselves.

The reason I say leave your kids stuff alone is because they may feel like you’re invading their privacy or taking over their things, leaving them with no choice of their own as to what they would like to keep. If your kids are older, have them go through this process with you! Give them their own bin and let them sort through their writing utensils as you sort through yours.

Purge, Purge, Purge, Baby!

Now that you have all your writing utensils in one spot, it’s time to start going through each one and getting rid of any that:

  • No longer work
  • You don’t like writing with (for me it’s those plain Bic pens, bleh!)
  • Are funky colors you know you’ll never use (lime green anyone?)

Once you’ve gotten your pile down to only the ones you want to keep, it’s time to categorize them. Make a pile on the floor (or wherever you want to sort them) for each of the following:

  • Pens
  • Pencils
  • Sharpie Markers
  • Whiteboard Markers
  • Highlighters
  • Colored Pencils (for your kids)
  • Crayons (for your kids)

Now it’s time to organize what you have left. There are a number of different organizers you can buy for writing utensils so choose what style works best for you. For the purpose of this post, however, I’m going to tell you about the method that works best for me.

If you read my About page, you know I love my mason jars! So naturally, this is how I’ve chosen to organize my writing utensils as well. 😊 Not only do I love the way this looks but it also helps keep my collection manageable because there are only so many pens and markers that will fit in a jar.
